Full Randomised Controlled Trial of Arthroscopic Surgery for Hip Impingement versus best CoNventional care: the FASHIoN study.

FASHIoN-Studying-Hip-ImpingementPhysioworks Health Group Camberwell, led by Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist Andrew Dalwood, is actively involved in this exciting research being carried out by investigators at the University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney.

The FASHIoN study is an NHMRC-funded research trial, comparing hip arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery with Personalised Hip Therapy for people with painful hip impingement (also known as femoracetabular impingement or FAI). It is a large study being carried out in Melbourne and Sydney, as well as in the United Kingdom.

Personalised Hip Therapy is a unique program developed by international experts, and delivered by experienced physiotherapists in the Melbourne area, such as the team at Physioworks Camberwell. Its effectiveness is being compared with hip arthroscopy, which is a minimally invasive form of hip surgery carried out by orthopaedic surgeons who specialise in this procedure.

Participants in the study undergo specialised MRI scans as well as muscle and movement tests at the Physiotherapy Movement Laboratory at the University of Melbourne. These occur at the beginning of the study and again one year later.

Several of the physiotherapists at both Physioworks Camberwell and Mulgrave (Waverley Park Physiotherapy Centre) are involved in this research as treating therapists, delivering the Personalised Hip Therapy program to study participants.

The research is led by the University of Sydney’s Professor David Hunter, Rheumatologist, while the University of Melbourne’s Professor Kim Bennell, Physiotherapist, is the principal investigator in Melbourne.
