Physioworks Physiotherapist Nick Adcock has been appointed as Head Physiotherapist of the Victorian Bushrangers and will play a key role in the preseason fitness program to physical prepare Victorian cricketers for the upcoming season.

Injury management/rehabilitation, strength and conditioning as well as injury prevention strategies are a key part of Nick’s role. “Liaising with team management and staff like coaches, podiatry, sports doctors as well as selectors is critical. A large part of the head physio role is to also provide regular updates to Cricket Australia on CA contracted players or certain players of interest” said Nick

Nick has been the Victorian Cricket Academy physiotherapist for the last three seasons. He has had much success and positive feedback in his role as head physio for the Melbourne Renegades team in the first two seasons of the Big Bash League.

Nick sees many sports science challenges in his new role particularly the current rate of injuries and the controversial player rotation policy at the national level. “There are always injuries in sport, especially at the elite level. Cricket is a very much load dependent sport, especially for fast bowlers who repeat a largely unnatural action with high forces involved. The current level of injuries are no different to what there always has been, however the cricketers themselves are playing more matches given there are now three different formats of the game. I think Cricket Victoria and it’s state programs are best placed to monitor workload issues. We now have up to the minute data available to us to better understanding periods of increased player injury risk”.

Nick role for Cricket Victoria provides expertise that he uses in consultation for his patients at Physioworks Health Group. “While patient workloads may not as excessive, my techniques and skills at the elite level are directly transferred and adapted to everyday patient assessment methods and rehab programs” said Nick, who is available for appointments at Physioworks Cranbourne and Pakenham clinics.

Jeff Jones, Managing Director of the PCN Sports Alliance, recently announced the 3 year agreement with Physioworks Health Group, which includes Physioworks providing health support services for the Casey Cardinia football inter-league teams and for the teams competing in the annual League Netball tri-series competition.

Physioworks Director David Francis said that health services sponsorship of the League was a natural extension to long standing, existing and ongoing relationship that Physioworks have with a number of local teams in the league including the Cranbourne Football Club and the Pakenham Football Club.

Physioworks Director David Francis recently received a Special Services Award from the Collingwood Football Club.

David, who has been the Head Physiotherapist at Collingwood FC for 17 seasons, was recognised by the club for his “outstanding contribution’’ to the club’s Sport Science and Medicine program.

Colingwood President Eddie McGuire presented the award to David at a recent Collingwood Football Club function. He praised David for his advice, innovation and leadership in player recovery, rehabilitation and management, for his team work in ensuring Collingwood is at the forefront of the AFL in its sports science program, and for the vital role David played in supporting the club in winning the 2010 Premiership.

In accepting the award, David thanked the club for bestowing on him the Special Service Award and that he was honoured to be working at the Collingwood Football Club which he regards as “professional, challenging, exciting and the best managed sporting club in the country’’

Amy completed a Bachelor of Physiotherapy with Honours from the University of Melbourne in 2006. After gaining experience at a large sports medicine practice and the public hospital system in Melbourne, Amy spent over two years living and working in the UK, where she continued private practice work and established a physiotherapy service for a sizeable government organisation in South East England.

Upon her return to Melbourne in 2010, Amy completed a Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at La Trobe University, and was successful in acquiring a highly competitive advanced practice musculoskeletal physiotherapy role in the Emergency Department at The Angliss Hospital.

Amy Bach is a qualified Clinical Pilates instructor through Dance Medicine Australia, and her service experience also includes Hydrotherapy. Amy has an interest in woman’s care including lower back and neck pain, headaches, musculoskeletal pain during pregnancy, female sporting injuries and orthopaedic surgery rehabilitation.

2013 marks a significant business milestone for Waverley Park Physiotherapy Centre (WPCC)

Since 1988, WPPC has been providing quality health care services to Mulgrave and surrounding local communities.

It is 25 years since the clinic was opened in Police Road providing general physiotherapy services.

Since this time, the current Police Rd medical precinct in and around WPPC has grown, while WPPC has extensively developed its practice facilities and range of health care services under the guidance of WPPC Director and Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, Andrew Dalwood.

Preparation for the demands of cricket must include a balance between too little and too much. Just because footy season is finished and cricket season starts, doesn’t mean it time to kick back and relax. In fact,(Stretch and Orchard ) demonstrated injury was more likely to occur in the early part of the season. Appropriate high intensity running capabilities do reduce the risk of injury (Gabbett), and thus should be encouraged to continue into any preseason program. A reduced level of fitness will result in not just physical fatigue, but also mental fatigue.

Recovery is one of the most important as aspects of any preparation and is often overlooked. Burnout and fatigue is more often than not a product of poor recovery. Importantly, overuse injuries can be viewed as the accumulation of training adaptations with inadequate rest intervals, or what is referred to as ‘overreaching’. We know that fatigue is a factor in the incidence of injury, but it is also can have an impact on the game – where the wickets are lost or the catches are dropped.

Adopting a few simple principals as part of any regular program can help maximise recovery and minimise injury. A long afternoon in the sun fielding requires stamina and a greater tolerance to fatigue. So start with good hydration and nutrition.

• Drinking plenty of water in the hours prior to playing and ensuring replacement of electrolytes during the game are essential for any long day in the sun, and will prevent cramping and tightness the following morning.
• Eating for performance will give you the edge over your competitors. Pre-game meals consisting of high carbohydrates and low in fat, 1-2 hours prior will load your body with the necessary sugars. Light, high energy foods such as fruit during the day and a healthy balanced meal (proteins and carbs) at the end of the day will replenish your body and aid recovery.

Our body recovers best during sleep. A routine and regulated sleep pattern will enhance a good sleep.

Other traditional methods of recovery that I recommend within an elite sporting environment are equally as important, such as ice, massage and stretching. Moreover, unloading the joint structures from the ‘impact’ of running, while maintaining an active exercise program, can be achieved with hydrotherapy/swimming program.

What is your role within the team? Are you physically prepared?

Research by Cricket Australia (Orchard et al) shows that fast bowlers have an increased incidence of injury related to the type of physical preparation, number of overs bowled and the intensity of the ground reaction forces at delivery. The age of the individual will also have some bearing on the likelihood of injury, with younger players being more susceptible to repetitive micro trauma to their underdeveloped musculoskeletal systems, particularly bowlers in their late teens and early 20’s (Dennis et al).

Cricket is sport with a very specific set of biomechanical tasks required to achieve optimal performance. As such a specific subset of injuries can occur with the repetitive nature of these tasks (Dennis). Cricket generally has a high incidence of lower quadrant injuries and within fast bowlers a higher incidence (16%) of lower back complaints (Orchard et al).

Certain musculoskeletal anomalies, such as available ankle and hip range of motion, can predict these injuries (Dennis), and therefore a physiotherapist physical examination/screening assessment can assist in highlighting the dysfunctions that potentially cause these injuries (Sims, Beakley). More importantly, an appropriate program for the lower quadrant can then be put in place, in conjunction with the coaching staff, to minimise the time out of the game with injuries during the season.

Fast bowling legend Dennis Lillee almost had his career cut short with a lower back stress fracture after initially ignoring the pain. Touted as a crucial element to his recovery, his Physiotherapy rehabilitation program included a long process to change his running action into a more efficient technique, minimising the impact on his body.
